The Power of Information

Generally people will ask more questions of a car salesman than they will a surgeon. I love when patients ask questions about their condition and treatment, if people are asking questions they’re engaged in what we’re doing.
If I can’t explain a diagnosis and plan for treatment to a patient in a straight forward digestible manner, the problem is with me not them. Healthcare professionals do an excellent job of clinical reasoning to come to a diagnosis, we can convince ourselves of a diagnosis. Where I think many of us fall down is then transferring this knowledge to the patient. EXPLAINING a diagnosis and treatment takes time and effort, it also plays a vital role in empowering patients/clients giving them ownership and control over their condition.
